Globalization of International Capital Markets:
Opportunities for Sovereign Borrowers and Investors
(organized jointly with Swisspeaks '04 at Club 101 in New York City)

This conference focused on the benefits and risks of global markets, particularly sovereign borrowers. It sought to address questions such as: How has access by sovereigns to private international capital markets improved their possibilities to develop faster? How have sovereign bonds allowed institutional and retail investors to diversify their portfolios? Has access to markets increased the volatility of private capital flows and promoted boom-bust cycles?

Conference Participants included Walter Kielholz, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Credit Suisse Group (keynote); Gerd Haeusler, Counselor and Director, International Capital Markets Department, International Monetary Fund (IMF); Richard McNeil, Managing Director, Goldman Sachs' Americas Financing Group; John Williamson, Senior Fellow, Institute for International Economics, Washington, D.C.; Fritz Zurbrugg, Executive Director, Swiss Voting Group, IMF.
